Let’s face it. For those of us who have an iPhone, as much as we love our iOS device, there is always one, two or even a few apps that come included with it that simply don’t cut it when it comes to fulfilling our needs. That shouldn’t be a problem right? Especially since the App Store boasts a huge selection of apps that can easily replace most of the iPhone’s pre-loaded ones.

However, why just hop into the App Store and buy apps when there are excellent free alternatives for those who know where to look for them?

here is a list of top 8 excellent applications that can easily replace many of the ones that come pre-loaded with your iPhone.

1) Google Maps Instead of Maps

While Apple Maps certainly isn’t as bad as it was at launch, it’s still not as good as Google Maps (free). Put simply, Google Maps has more data, more up-to-date directions, better live traffic conditions, and an abundance of info about anything you search for. You also get biking and public transit directions in the app, which Apple Maps hasn’t bothered with at all.

2) Evernote (Replaces: Notes)
It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that the Notes app on iOS is overly simple and just plain ugly. Thankfully though, Evernote is not only a great free replacement, it is a complete solution that allows you to take notes, store photos, create to-do’s, record voice reminders and more. What makes Evernote even better is that it also has applications for both the iPad and the Mac, allowing you to keep all your notes and reminders in sync and always at hand. 3) CloudMagic Replaces: Mail

CloudMagic, which is free in the App Store, is an email app for iPhone, iPad, and Android and enables you to manage all of your mail from any service — including Gmail, Google Apps, Yahoo, Exchange, Outlook, and IMAP services. CloudMagic’s simple inbox and powerful tools help you manage your mailbox with swipe actions, an edit mode to act on multiple messages, and reminders to help keep track of important messages. CloudMagic provides a streamlined reading experience and enables you to save tasks to your favorite task management and productivity apps. You can protect access to the app with a passcode, and it’s designed to go easy on your device’s battery and data.

4) Camera+ Instead of Camera

Apple’s done a lot of work to make the default Camera app more powerful, but it’s still lacking the fine-tuned controls of Camera+ ($2.99). Camera+ adds all kinds of handy photography features, including better exposure and focus lock, a useful horizon level, a fantastic Clarity filter, and a number of scene shooting modes. It’s all tied together in an app that doesn’t feel cluttered, but has everything you need to shoot great looking photos.

5) Yahoo Weather Instead of Weather

The default Apple Weather app is about as barebones as you can get. It includes the current weather, five day forecast, and a daily forecast. That’s not really enough information to help you get dressed for the day. Instead, we like Yahoo Weather (free). It provides more details about the upcoming forecast without being overwhelming, and has a great design to boot.

6) PlayerXtreme HD Instead of Videos

The biggest problem with the default Videos app is the lack of support for a wide range of video formats. PlayerXtreme HD fixes that. It supports just about every video format under the sun, has a simple interface for quick navigation, and even supports Wi-Fi transfers between two devices with the app.

7) Ecoute Instead of Music

Sometimes, you want to explore an alternative but not end up in a strange land that has a lot of new things. If Groove and Track 8 appeared overwhelming in design or features (or both), Ecoute should be a friendlier, easier alternative to use. Although not a glorified alternative like the previous two, Ecoute does its job fine. Also worth mentioning is the neo-skeuomorphism that looks like a merger of new and old schools of design. Large album art, controls and a really easy-to-use interface marks Ecoute as a worthy alternative to the stock Music app.

8) Kindle Instead of iBooks

Unless you plan on sticking with Apple for the rest of your life, buying books with iBooks is a bad idea because that software will only be available for iOS and OS X. Instead, you’re better off going with the Kindle app (free). Sure, your books are still packed with DRM, but Amazon has its Kindle app on just about every device imaginable, so you’ll always have access to your book collection even if you decide to leave the Apple ecosystem. You’ll also have access on the Kindle itself, which is nice—reading books on an iPad isn’t always ideal. Plus, the Kindle app is just pretty awesome as it is.
